Training and assessment student of the Month
Training and Assessment alumni, Margaret Hammer, tells her training journey…
We are so grateful for our loyal and hard-working Rose Training family; they are the reason we love coming to work each and every day! Our students are intelligent, determined and ambitious, and Margaret Hammer is no exception. Margaret started her Rose Training journey with a TAE Cert IV and has since completed a Project Management Diploma, WHS Cert IV and LLN upgrade with us. We are so appreciative of her commitment and diligence to her RTA course work that we decided to name her Student of the Month! Congratulations Margaret! Recently, Social Media Assistant Ankita talked to Margaret about her Rose Training experience.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your educational background?
I grew up in New Zealand and studied overseas before coming to live in Australia 18 years ago. I have a university background with a PhD in History and I had a successful research career before taking time out to have a family.
What led you to do a Training and Assessment course with us at Rose Training?
I knew that getting back into the workforce would be tough, especially after spending ten years in regional Queensland, so I thought it would be a good way of getting myself ready for the job market. I have a strong background in education having a taught in a university, coached netball and done lots of literacy support work at my children’s schools so it was a pretty easy choice.
” I LOVE Rose Training! It’s such a friendly place. I’m a family person and I love the family atmosphere at Rose. The trainers are really friendly and helpful and the morning teas are just fantastic!”
Tell us about the courses you have done with us. What did you enjoy about them?
I started by doing the Cert IV in TAE and really enjoyed that. After that, I thought a Diploma of Project Management would be useful; I had done a lot of project management activities over the years managing research projects and organising events for nonprofit organisations. It took me a while to finish but I’m so glad I did – now I feel confident that I could take on almost any kind of project and make a success of it. I know what needs to be done and how to do it! I also did the LLN upgrade late last year and recently completed a Cert IV in WHS.
What skills have your courses taught you that will further your career in the Voc Ed industry?
All my courses have really helped to bring me up to date with workplace regulations, policies and procedures. They’ve helped to give my existing qualifications a more practical dimension and given me a renewed sense of relevance and confidence in my skill set. It’s been great meeting so many new people from different industries and all my trainers have been so wonderfully supportive.
“I’d really like to bring my two passions – education and communication – together in some way.”
What are your current career goals and aspirations from the courses you have done?
I’ve worked for myself for a long time but it gets a bit lonely sometimes. I really enjoy working with other people and I need something varied and creative where I can make use of my communication, research and project management skills. I worked as the marketing manager of a school in 2012 and absolutely loved it.
Where do you hope to be 5 years from now, career wise?
I would like to be the director of marketing and/or communications in a research centre, school or university. The nonprofit sector also really appeals to me. I’d really like to bring my two passions – education and communication – together in some way. But who knows what the future will hold? I do also have a couple of biographies I want to write and I’d love to do another kids’ book as I’m always making up silly rhymes.
Would you recommend Rose Training to your friends and family? If so, for what particular reasons?
Absolutely. I LOVE Rose Training! It’s such a friendly place. I’m a family person and I love the family atmosphere at Rose. The trainers are really friendly and helpful and the morning teas are just fantastic!
