So you think you can teach
When you think of who your favourite teachers were and why, you can probably narrow it down to a few traits that set them apart.
Check out our list of the top 5 features of a great teacher to help you decide whether a diploma of vocational education and training might be for you:
1. Patience
Each class at school is made up of different students from an endless range of backgrounds and learning abilities.
From the class clown, the goody-two shoes, or the child who struggles with English but is great at outdoor activities, great teachers are able to encourage each child to achieve their best. This can sometimes be far from smooth sailing, but a truly effective teacher is disposed to continue to believe in their student’s unique potential.
If people often tell you that you have the patience of a saint, then you might want to consider becoming a teacher, as you’ll need this in spades!
2. Listening skills
If you are often described as a good listener, are able to clearly explain new and difficult concepts and can reduce them to a simple set of points, teaching might be your destined career!
In addition, teachers must be able to hear what those in their charge have to say—being an effective instructor means genuinely listening to your students.
Many teachers also say that they learn as much, if not more, from the kids they teach so it’s a job that demands a lot, but has the potential to give so much back.
3. Problem-solving
Education is so much more than simply teaching set curriculum topics such as maths.
Teachers need to understand and work through a range of issues that might arise inside and outside the classroom. For example, bullying, lack of motivation and other behavioural difficulties.
If you are a creative and empathetic problem-solver then teaching might just be the job for you!
4. Ability to communicate and build rapport with children
Teachers can’t hope to make a positive, lasting impression on their students and inspire a passion for learning unless their students respond to their methods.
The ability to interact with young kids is an exceptional skill that is too precious not to be shared!
5. Getting a thrill out of sharing your knowledge
Another distinguishing feature of a fantastic educator is someone who enjoys seeing the impact they have had on their pupils and feeling satisfied that they have made a difference to impressionable young lives that will serve them well in their future.
